Alfea The College For Fairies and Their Staff
Alfea
The college for fairies, Alfea, aims to prepare girls to become the guardian fairies of their planets (or realms). In seasons 1 – 4, the students would graduate and become guardian fairies once they’ve earned their Enchantix powers.The later seasons don’t specify the graduation terms, as some of the students have already earned them by that point.
It is led by Headmistress Faragonda, a kind, but stern fairy, who helps students when they are in need. She often assists the Winx on their missions, taking on a maternal role for the girls. In the 4kids dub, it is specified that she is a former fairy godmother and an Alfea alumna. However, the version of the official Winx website from 2009 states that she was once a witch.
Griselda is Alfea’s head of discipline. She makes sure the students obey the rules or get punished for breaking them, as seen over the course of the show many times. While she seems to be cold and stern, she has some tiny soft spots for the students. In season 7, it is revealed that she and Faragonda used to be roommates during their time as students of Alfea.
Professor Wizgiz teaches metamorphosis and has been doing it for 1,000 years. As such, he can change his appearance at will. Palladium is the professor of potionology who changed his appearance drastically in the second season, due to natural elf evolution. Students often mock him because he is very naive and young. Nevertheless, he’s a fierce warrior. In season 2, episode 9 of the RAI dub, he starts teaching invocation class.
In the second season, professor Avalon started teaching at Alfea. Initially, he was kidnapped and replaced by a monster who took his appearance on. Since he has broken free, he has been teaching magiphilosophy at Alfea. In season 2, episode 9 of the RAI dub, the fake Avalon teaches the cognitive analysis class.
DuFour is a professor of etiquette at Alfea who’s rarely seen in the show. She most notably appears alongside Palladium and Wizgiz in the second episode of the first season. Other members of the faculty include, the librarian Ms. Barbatea, Ofelia who is Alfea’s doctor and nurse, and Knut, who seems to be Alfea’s janitor in the earlier seasons, but in episode 1 of season 8 was confirmed to also be its handyman. Daphne becomes a professor at Alfea in the second episode of season 7. She has been known as the one of the nymphs of Magix in season 1. In season six, she is known as the nymph of Domino and the nymph of Sirenix. She is Bloom’s older sister and the crown princess of Domino. At Alfea, she teaches the history of magic.
For an extremely brief period at the beginning episodes of Season 4, the Winx return to Alfea as teachers of Winxology, before embarking on their mission to Earth.
Alfea itself is a castle with its own campus, dorms, and many specialised areas used for classes and research. The Simulator (or the Magical Reality Chamber in the 4kids dub), used for training in virtual environments, is one of them. There is also Alfea’s Forbidden Magic Archive where powerful knowledge is kept, the Alfea Greenhouse filled with all kinds of plants and who’s caretaker is Flora, the Alfea Natural Park which Faragonda uses as a sanctuary for fairy animals where they can live in harmony, and so many more.
Cloud Tower
Across from Alfea, on the other side of Lake Roccaluce, sits Cloud Tower, the school for witches. According to a description from 2009, the school embodies evil and exploits its strength. In episode 17 of the second season of RAI dub, it is revealed that it is actually a magical living entity with roots and branches, which has been created by ancient witches. Its students study sorcery and curses.
The headmistress of Cloud Tower is lady Griffin. According to the aforementioned description, she teaches the basics of witchcraft and knows all of Cloud Tower’s secrets. Over the course of the show, it becomes clear that she has the ability to control the Tower. According to episode 9 of the second season of RAI dub, she is also a world expert on astrology and prophecy. She is a close friend of Faragonda and Saladin. As for the other members of the faculty, there are the sisters, professor Ediltrude and professor Zarathustra.
Red Fountain
According to the map of Magix, Red Fountain is positioned to the north of Cloud Tower. Its students are called “the Specialists” in the RAI dub, while in the 4kids one, they’re called “the heroes” and “the Specialists” interchangeably. Unlike fairies and witches, they don’t use spells. Instead, they learn how to wield weapons, both magical and technological ones. They also learn how to drive specialised vehicles which they use on their missions. Each specialist gets assigned his own dragon with which he trains at the school, as it was written on the Winx website in 2006. Initially, Red Fountain looked like a medieval castle. After the original building was destroyed by the Trix in season 1, the school was rebuilt. The new structure looks much more futuristic and technologically advanced. The most recognisable part of it has to be the fountain-like waterfalls which flow off its edges.
The headmaster of Red Fountain is Saladin, a close friend of Faragonda and lady Griffin. The Winx Club website from 2006 describes him as wise and quiet. Unlike his students, he is a master sorcerer who uses magic. He carries a staff with a dragon head and a purple orb on top of it, to channel his power and cast spells. His nephew is Helia.
Codatorta is a former dragon hunter who now teaches sports at Red Fountain. He is known to be very strict and skilled in combat, as was written on the Winx website in 2006. He is also the one who will intervene if the students’ dragons get out of hand.
