Technically More Than Christmas

Ever since arriving on Magix for her first semester at Alfea, Tecna had inquired about everything new around her. They didn’t have pizza on Zenith or the vast array of plant species Flora often brought into the dorm from Black Mud Swamp.

After spending several years learning about Magix and it’s charms, she never thought her next journey with the Winx Club would have led them to Earth.

With the Wizards of the Black Circle creating indescribable chaos, the Earth fairies seeking revenge and the overnight success of their new business, not much time was left to explore what Earth had to offer.

Of course, over the years, Bloom had educated the Winx on the holiday traditions she’s celebrated back home with Mike and Vanessa, but Tecna knew there had to be others.

The Fairy of Technology had come to the conclusion that Earth was like any other planet when it came to it’s inhabitants, their cultures and traditions varied widely across the land.

As the other girls were either visiting their home planets, taking in the sights of Gardenia or using the time to rest, Tecna was ready to tackle some necessary research. She knew she had a few hours before Bloom’s family Christmas party and wanted to take the opportunity to learn more about Earth holiday customs.

“It’s time, Digit!” The pink haired fairy exclaimed as she sat down at the desktop computer.

“For what, exactly?” Replied the pixie of Nanotechnology.

Tecna was always talking and typing, a natural-born multitasking fairy. “For the crucial investigation of this Earth holiday. I have to be prepared for any specific topic to arise at the party.”

She tapped away on the lit up keyboard embedded into the desk. She glanced down at her rarely polished nails. Stella insisted on having a spa night before her and other girls split up for their separate adventures during the day.

A mix of purple and pink pearlescent polish. One color to match her hair, the other to match her signature color and usually the color of her transformations.

It’s not like Tecna didn’t enjoy pampering activities like that, she simply would have used the time to work on her gadgets and write down the new findings they discovered regarding the Earth fairies. Mainly due to the fact that all her elders and teachers, including Ms. Faragonda, deduced that Earth fairies had disappeared centuries ago.

She placed her hard-drive on the desk and it began to sync with the desktop computer. Digit sat down next to it with her legs crossed, ready to start exploring the world wide web.

“I guess I should start with Christmas. Bloom said it’s a big celebration for a man’s birthday. I mean I have a birthday in December and so does she. Imagine if we had a whole holiday around the world dedicated to us.” Tecna pulled up a hologram of planet Earth and graced her painted finger over it to make it spin slowly.

“That does seem pretty outrageous, for a singular person that is.” Digit stared up at the glowing orb.

“Indeed.” Tecna nodded and the illuminated globe continued to rotate.

The fairy continued scrolling through articles and databases to further understand how the holiday began.

Tecna was enthralled by the images of Christmas sprawled across the screen. The dazzling lights looked like something Stella would create in their dorm room in effort to avoid turning on the overhead lights, which she called “absolutely hideous for the complexion.”

She could feel the warmth radiating off them as if they were in her palm. Digit recognized the look of longing and offered a suggestion to her fairy companion.

“I believe there are abilities you’ve yet to take advantage of with this higher level of power.”

“Such as?” Tecna’s eyes unlocked from the computer screen.

“For example, my research has led me to conclude that you can transport yourself into the world of images, websites, and mostly anything on the digital plane with the Believix power.” The pixie stood up and recited from the notes on her mini tablet.

“It can’t hurt to test that hypothesis further. How about this picture? It’s of a town in Newer England where they have recorded something called Hallmark movies. It’s worth a try, of course.” Tecna rose from the swivel chair and brushed her hair out of her eyes, before cracking her fingers.

“Indeed.” Digit put away her tablet and closed her eyes preparing for the teleportation to commence.

“Magic Winx! Believix! Tecna, Fairy of Technology!”

Glimmers of bright purple and green sparkles appeared around the fairy as she transformed into her newest fairy form. It came complete with platform boots, a shimmering bodysuit and enhanced wings powered by the citizens’ belief in fairies and magic.

Her heels clacked on the wooden floor as she descended from transforming. “Are you ready, Digit?” Tecna exclaimed with the utmost excitement in her tone.

Digit stood tall and replied, “I’m always prepared for research and investigation.”

Tecna took a breath in and held her hands out towards the computer screen with the web page open. She immediately felt her new powers pulling her into the virtual realm further than ever before.

As if a light bulb lit up in her brain, she knew the incantation to enact the spell and transport her into the virtual world of the photograph.

“Transportus in photus.” She muttered under her breath.

“Transportus In Photus!” The fairy repeated with more confidence. She was the Fairy of Technology, Guardian Fairy of Zenith. She had the knowledge to unlock any spell and use her new powers to their fullest potential.

Her fingers were becoming transparent, along with the rest of her body. Her eyes followed the green particles traveling towards the computer and disappearing into it.

Tecna was familiar with teleportation and used it often, especially with their new Zoomix wings. She closed her eyes and accepted that she was switching corporal dimensions for the time being.

Before she could even open her eyes, she acknowledged the drastic change in temperature in the air around her.

As she blinked, a frost particle landed in her eye. “Ooooh! That is cold!” She shivered. Usually when in fairy form, the intense temperatures didn’t bother her, but as she reminded herself with Believix, she had other additional forms she could use as well.

“I suggest changing into your Lovix form, Tecna. The temperature is at thirty two degrees Fahrenheit and decreasing.” Digit pulled out her mini tablet and scanned herself from head to toe. This allowed for climate appropriate items to appear on her body.

The pixie rubbed her hands together, now clad in blue mittens, “That’s much better.”

Tecna smiled in delight, “My turn. Magic Winx Lovix!” As she finished transforming fur accents and colorful layers manifested within her previous ensemble.

“Agreed.” The fairy nodded and she glanced up to the sky and the space around her. She could see almost every star in the sky lit up, not a singular cloud to block the view.

Living in cities like Zenith and Gardenia, Tecna had forgotten what the night sky looked like without the harsh lights of the buildings scattered along the skyline.

“Now this is truly magical.” Tecna’s eyes came down to earth and were met with a quaint village gleaming with twinkling holiday illustrations.

“Where are we, Digit? I don’t recognize this place.” The fairy opened her palm to reveal a three dimensional map of the area. She pointed to the dot in the middle of her hand, “It appears we are in a town called Mystic, Connecticut.”

Digit points to the wooden placard in the distance. “It says it over there as well.” Tecna’s eyes follow to where Digit is motioning to, “It doesn’t hurt to double check.”

At the center of Mystic village stood a 22-foot pine tree outrageously decorated with bedazzled ornaments, flashing lights and candy canes.

It reminded Tecna of the trees alongside Black Mud Swamp and the forests surrounding the Alfea campus.

The snowflakes began to fall more consistently than a few moments ago. The frozen water landed on her hand and she noticed the patterns in them. The mini lines and points made beautiful geometric patterns.

Digit chimed in with a fun fact, “All snowflakes are considered different from one another because as they fall through the air, they encounter slightly varying temperature and humidity levels, leading to unique growth patterns and shapes, making it virtually impossible for two snowflakes to be exactly alike, according to researchers.”

“How fascinating!” Tecna motioned with her fingers to magically enlarge the snowflake to study it further. “Let’s take lots of pictures for scientific research and to show the girls at the holiday party.”

The pixie of Nanotechnology began snapping pictures on her tablet. “What a remarkable notion!”

Digit started to smell an incredible aroma across the square.

Tecna was reminded of something by the scent. “I think I know what that is. I’ve had it before.” The pair flew over and approached the staff member at the kiosk.

“Hello! What are you selling over here? Is it hot chocolate?” Tecna exclaimed, her eyes bright with curiosity.

“Yes! It’s a little different though. It’s an Italian style hot chocolate called Cioccolato Caldo, made with milk, sugar, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and cornstarch. Did you want to try some?” Tecna nodded.

The worker handed over a red and white coffee cup with a cardboard holder, so the fairy wouldn’t burn her hand on the beverage. “Let me know what you think!”

Tecna took a small sip of the beverage and smiled. “It feels like a warm hug. I love it! Thank you!”

“Exactly! Right? It’s one of my favorites. We also have food here as well, like Christmas cookies, Latkes, Challah bread, cornbread, Mac and cheese and collard greens. Does any of that interest you?”

Tecna listened to the faint singing of carolers a few stalls over, “All of them, if you don’t mind!” She took a bite of each piece of food and offered a smaller piece to Digit to have a taste.

“Mmmmhh! Delicious!” Digit gasped.

“I have to agree! We’ll have to try and make these for the party later.”

“Oh great! You can take some with you in a little to go container if you’d like.”

“Thank you.” The technology fairy replied. She waved her hand over the food and it miniaturized to fit into her bodysuit pocket.

The magical beings waved goodbye to the worker as they headed into a gift shop store filled to the brim with knickknacks, jewelry, traditional holiday gifts and some things Tecna had never seen before.

“I know the Winx said we weren’t exchanging gifts this year, but I want to do something special for them, especially since we’ve traveled all the way here to explore holiday festivities and I want to share my research with them.”

Digit nodded in agreement and swiped up to her categorized list of every girl’s favorite things to use in situations such as these.

“I think Stella would never want to leave here. They have everything we need to make the perfect holiday for everyone.”

“Then it makes sense why Hallmark card movies film here. It’s a snapshot from a Christmas story.”

Tecna felt the heat from the string lights hung around the store, “Exactly. I want to take this feeling home with us and show the girls. They deserve to have the magic of Christmas and all the winter holidays.”

“I don’t believe we’ve found any new magic here, Tecna. My scans aren’t reading anything magical besides you and I.” Digit held her tablet and moved it around the area.

“No, Digit. It’s not physical magic you can see or touch. It’s something I’m feeling in my heart since being here, sharing traditions with others and memories with loved ones. That’s how the magic is shared, by showing it to others and using it every year to make us stronger.”

“This is the Christmas magic Bloom was talking about. I hypothesize that it doesn’t simply consist of Christmas traditions, all the holidays must be included, such as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and many more holidays yet to be.”

The pixie wrote in her notes and continued taking pictures of all the holiday merchandise throughout the building. Her tablet acknowledged the ornaments were for Christmas, to include and display memories from years past.

Tecna followed Digit throughout and matched her curious energy. The pair identified Hanukkah menorah to display the eight days of the holiday as well as the candle holder called Kinara for the celebration of Kwanzaa.

“I never knew there were so many different celebrations for one time of the year. Christmas isn’t the only holiday for people to enjoy. I think I’ll bring parts of each holiday back with me to share with the girls and display in the windows of Love and Pet!”

“That would be very nice.” Digit smiled and collected the items to bring back with them.

“And I’ll pick an ornament out for each of them, to put on the tree. A small token of my love for the girls.” Tecna placed the trinkets in her hand to miniaturize them.

“It’s time to share the Christmas magic, Digit!”
