Season One- 2004
At the beginning of season 1, we are introduced to Bloom, a young girl who deeply wants to become a fairy. During a trip to the park, she stumbles upon one such fairy battling an ogre and his ghouls. Seeing as the fairy was losing the fight, Bloom steps in to help her, without exactly knowing how to do that. She gets attacked, but saves the two of them by summoning a magic shield, followed by a burst of energy.
The fairy, Stella, takes Bloom to the realm of Magix, a world where magic is a part of daily life, where being a fairy, a witch, or any other magical being, is common. The girls enroll in Alfea, a school for fairies, where they meet Flora, Tecna, and Musa, whom they are sharing a dorm with. The connection between the five of them is instantly formed and is made stronger when they survive their first battle with the witches Icy, Darcy, and Stormy – the Trix. The five fairy friends then decide to become a team and name themselves the Winx.
This season mostly follows Bloom. From the beginning, it becomes clear that she is not actually from Earth, which sends her on a quest of finding out the truth about her heritage and powers. Her search leads her to Domino. Once a happy and lush planet, it was destroyed by the three ancestral witches, and is now covered in snow and is desolate. In the castle buried beneath the ice, the Winx support Bloom as she finds out that she is the princess of Domino. Her sister, Daphne, sent her away to Earth in order to keep her safe from the evil that destroyed their kingdom and family.
Domino was a place where the Great Dragon, who had created the Magic Dimension, came to rest once his job was done. Some of his flame resides in Bloom and is the source of her power. As the fairy of the Dragon Flame, Bloom’s power is the very essence of the universe, the spark of life. That power was what the witches were searching for when they attacked her planet. It is also the reason why she became the main target of their three descendants, the Trix.
Bloom has a crush on a blonde, blue-eyed Specialist named “Brandon”, or so she believes. Despite the two having chemistry and spending quality time together over the course of the season, he hasn’t given Bloom any indication of how he feels about her. To clear things up, she and the rest of the Winx go to Red Fountain. While there, Bloom finds out that “Brandon” is actually Prince Sky of Eraklyon, who is engaged to Princess Diaspro. This breaks her heart and she leaves Alfea and goes back to Gardenia. Accordingly, this means that Stella’s boyfriend’s name is actually “Brandon” and he is Sky’s squire.
When Bloom goes back to Earth, the Trix nearly kill her adoptive parents, Mike and Vanessa. She manages to save them, but becomes trapped herself. The three witches take advantage of her weakened state and steal her power for themselves. With the greatest power in the universe in their hands, they take Cloud Tower over and summon the Army of Darkness (AKA the “Army of Decay” in the 4kids dub).
Stella arrives on Earth and takes Bloom back to Alfea. Once there, Bloom tells Faragonda what happened. The headmistress then sends her and the rest of the Winx fairies to Domino, so she could regain the power of the Dragon Flame. Roaming the hallways of the royal palace, the fairies find the ghost of Daphne, who shows them Bloom’s crown. By reuniting with it, she finds out everything about her past and powers. When the Trix find out about the Winx’s mission, they send monsters after them. The Specialists arrive and help them fight and return to Magix. On the way there, Sky tells Bloom he broke up with Diaspro and admits to having feelings for Bloom. The two manage to reconcile and eventually begin their relationship.
The witches and their army proceed to destroy the Red Fountain school and the City of Magix before turning their attention to Alfea. The school for fairies soon becomes a refugee haven, since neither the witches of Cloud Tower, and the Specialists, have anywhere else to go. Together, the three schools unite in order to fight back against the evil threatening to overtake the Magic Dimension.
Reinvigorated from the visit to her home planet, Bloom follows the voice of her sister to the lake Roccaluce. With Daphne’s help, she finds the power inside of herself once again. In the meantime, the final battle rages at Alfea, with the Trix personally leading the attack. Bloom joins in when all hope seems to be lost. She fights Icy, while the rest of the Winx take on Darcy and Stormy.
Darcy and Stormy are the first to fall against the Winx Club. Once Bloom defeats Icy, the Army of Darkness disappears and the war finally ends. After the gloom, Alfea hosts a party for everyone. The festivities mark the transition into brighter times. They also seem to signify the end of the school year.
