Lumens are beings that live on stars. One of them, by the name of Twinkly, comes to Afea to ask the most powerful fairies of the Magic Dimension for help. Evil creatures have been draining the light of stars. The Winx go to her star, Lumenia, and fix the flow of one of the rivers of light. To achieve that, the Winx and the Specialists battle against monsters sent by Valtor. By completing their task, they restore the power of the queen of all stars, Derana. She gives the Winx the power of Cosmix. With it, they can restore the cores of stars and bring their light back. She also grants Twinkly the power to tell the Winx which star is in danger at any time, so she joins them on their missions.
Shortly after, Lumenia gets attacked by the staryummies who drain the light out of the cores of the stars. They are led by a wizard named Obscurum, who has been draining starlight to make his master, Valtor stronger. The core of the Lumeina loses its light, but the Winx successfully return it.
Valtor and Opscurum’s next target is Peripla, a starship that lights the way for other spacecrafts as they travel through space. As to not upset the lumens who live on it, the Winx introduce themselves as the band “PopStars” who came to perform for them. Obscurum boards the ship with his monsters and they drain its core. The Winx manage to rekindle its light, but the wizard escapes.
The ruby which channels the core’s energy and makes the lumens able to steer Peripla gets stolen by the scientist, Orion. The Specialists return it. The reason for his stealing was that his planet’s star, Iridia, was drained of its light, making the planet, Prometia, impossible to survive on. The Winx offer to restore Iridia’s core, but when they fail, Orion turns on them and makes a deal with Valtor to save his planet.
Valtor betrays him and turns all the lumens of Iridia into staryummies. Among them is Twinkyl’s best friend, Lumilla. Flora and Stella cast a spell to make Prometia’s plants thrive again until they can repair Iridia’s core. Orion apologises and teams up with them after that, giving them his lab to use as they wish.
On Andros, the underwater star, Gorgol, is drained by Obscurum’s creatures. The Winx save it by using both their Sirenix and Cosmix powers. Afterwards, they have to defend the star Hypsos. At the end of the battle against Obscurum, Twinkly notices Lumilla, who has been turned into a staryummy. When Twinkly shows affection for Lumilla, she becomes a lumen again.
The Cosmix power can only restore the star cores if they are intact. Since Obscurum has been breaking them, the number of irreparable stars is growing. On the star Syderia, the fairy friends have to illuminate a crystal in order to replace its core. The Winx take a piece of the crystal to Orion so he could use it to build artificial cores for all the stars who lost their light.
Meanwhile, Valtor notices the Wishing Star passing through space. The Star has the power to grant its holder their greatest wish. Due to the dark nature of his powers, the wizard cannot obtain her by himself. To do that, he needs a power that’s compatible with hers. For that reason, he decides to steal Bloom’s Cosmix power by attacking her adoptive parents while simultaneously draining the Sun’s light and leaving the Winx powerless to fix it. Bloom gives him her power in order to save both her friends and family, but Cosmix rejects Valtor and weakens him.
While his master is attacking Earth and the Sun, Obscurum attacks Lumenia with his army of staryummies. It is revealed he is the brother of Queen Derana, Prince Argen, who has become jealous of always living in her shadow. Some time ago, he called upon Valtor and used what was left of his life energy after season 3 to give him back his body. In return, the wizard gave Argen new powers and he turned into Obscurum.
The queen apologises for neglecting his feelings and promises him they will rule Lumenia as equals. Then, she hugs her brother. With that, the dark magic goes away and Argen becomes his true self again. The lumens of Lumenia do the same with the staryummies. They hug them and let them know they care about them, which causes them to turn back into lumens. The threat to Lumenia ends.
Valtor decides to summon the Trix from limbo to help him get the Wishing Star. He offers them great power if they do as he wants and threatens to send them back if they don’t. Since he summoned them, they bear his mark, which ties them to him, so they can’t refuse even if they wanted to. They manage to capture the Star, but she splits herself into seven Prime Stars and one Star Case which contains her essence. The Star Case lands on Lumenia and the Winx have to put the seven Prime Stars back into it. Only then will the Wishing Star’s true form be restored.
To find the Prime Stars, they need to use the star compass which is inside the Case. They go inside of the Case by using their Enchantix powers. The Trix follow them but are unsuccessful in deterring them. The Winx get the compass after all.
The quest for the Prime Stars takes the Winx through Alfea’s well and beyond the clouds. It takes them to many different places across the magical universe. However, to be able to obtain the Stars, they have to overcome a different personal problem every time. Eventually, the Winx have three stars, but so do the Trix and Valtor. The tie breaks when the seventh Star happens to be on Icy’s home planet of Dyamond.
When the Trix get onto the planet, Icy reveals that it was once her kingdom, and she was one of its two princesses. It was a beautiful and peaceful place. Until a witch overtook it. She turned Icy’s sister, Sapphire, into a fox and covered the entire planet and its people with ice. After that, Icy vowed she would return to Dyamond once she became the strongest witch and free her sister from the curse placed upon her. This means that Darcy and Stormy are not her biological sisters.
The seventh Star turns out to be in a tunnel too small for any human to enter. Sapphire, however, goes to get it for her sister. Before she can reach it, ice falls in front of the tunnel’s entrance. Rather than sacrificing her, Icy pulls Sapphire out before she gets trapped. By doing so, she has proven herself worthy to get the seventh Star. The Trix then use it to free themselves from Vator’s mark. Unfortunately, the Star cannot break the curse put on Sapphire.
The Trix plan to challenge Valtor and take the three Stars from him, but before they do, the Winx attack his layer. They keep the Trix busy outside of it, while Stella, Aisha, and Flora disguise themselves as Icy, Darcy, and Stormy and try to steal the Stars. They are discovered and Icy has to choose whether to give the seventh Star to Valtor or to the Winx. Since he plans to destroy the Magic Dimension, Icy gives it to her old fairy enemies.
When the Winx get the seventh Star, the missing three fly towards them and the Wishing Star returns back to her true form. She offers to grant the Winx their greatest wish. They ask to be able to protect the magic dimension forever. Once the wish is granted, they all attack Valtor and defeat him.
Back at Alfea, the Winx hold a celebratory concert and the Wishing Star creates a new constellation in the sky above them – the Winx constellation.
