Aisha- Fairy of Waves
Originally known to many of us as Layla, Aisha is the fairy of fluids and the princess of Andros (or Tides in the 4kids dub), who was introduced as the sixth member of the Winx Club in the second season of the show. Her power source was later changed and she became known as the fairy of waves.
Her parents are Queen Niobe and King Teredor of Andros, who rule its land. Her aunt and uncle are Queen Ligea and King Neptune, who rule the seas of Andros. Respectively, princess Tressa, along with her brothers, princes Nereus and Tritannus, are Aisha’s cousins.
Aisha is bonded with Piff, who is the pixie of sweet sleep, according to a version of the official Winx Club website from 2009.
Growing up at the royal court of Andros, Aisha was taught to obey etiquette, to mind her posture and be quiet. During that time, she also didn’t have any friends. While hiding away in a tower, she met her friend Anne. The young princess was so mesmerised by the freedom that Anne had while she was dancing, that she offered to teach Aisha to dance as well.Some time later, Anne moved away. This led Aisha to develop a fear of being alone.That fear made it difficult for her to open up to the other Winx fairies at first.
We come to learn that Aisha was never the person who could sit still and obey strict rules. She’s a free spirit and very spontaneous and active by nature. It is no surprise that dance became one of her main hobbies, as well as sports, especially swimming. Aisha is also known to be a skilled motorbike driver. Her love for dance and music enabled her to quickly make friends with Musa. On the other hand, the friendship between her and Stella took a while to develop due to their seemingly polar opposite interests. However, according to the official Winx Club website, Aisha’s true best friend of the group is Flora.
Over the last 20 years, Aisha has been through a lot. She was the first of the Winx to encounter and try to fight Lord Darkar while saving the pixies. After that battle, she was left exhausted and fainted near Alfea. Once Darkar had been defeated, Andros was attacked by a wizard who turned all its mermaids into monsters and left Aisha blinded by a dark spell at the hands of Valtor (AKA “Baltor” in the 4kids dub). Even that didn’t break her spirit. Despite suddenly losing her sight, she helped Princess Tressa save her mother, Queen of the mermaids, Ligea, and by doing so, earning her Enchantix power. This made her the first Winx fairy to gain her ‘final fairy form’. With it, she was powerful enough to break the curse and enable herself to see again.
She later fell in love and started dating Nabu. The two shared a beautiful, yet short romance, during which they got engaged. Unfortunately, during battle, Nabu fell into a deep sleep akin to death, and disappeared after, as confirmed by Iginio Straffi during a panel at ComicCon Napoli in 2024. The loss hit Aisha hard, leading her down a path of revenge. With the help of the Winx, she managed to recover. Her family and planet were attacked yet again when her cousin Tritannus attempted to gain control over the Magic Dimension.
Throughout all the hardships she has gone through, Aisha stayed hopeful and determined. She sacrificed her well-being in order to help others. Despite all the darkness she faced, she continues to move through life with music and dance in her heart. She is the definition of a guardian fairy and a wonderful friend.
